There are two ways into Zhangjiajie on a foreign passport: a full tourist visa, or the 240-hour visa-free transit. The second one surprises people. Ten days, no visa application, and Zhangjiajie’s own airport is on the list of ports where it works.
We are a travel agency, not a visa agency. Nothing here is legal advice, and we do not file anything on your behalf. What follows is what our guests actually do, checked against the current policy, and you should confirm the details for your nationality before you buy flights.
The 240-hour route, in plain terms
Since December 2024, China’s transit-without-visa window is 240 hours — ten days. You enter at an approved port, you stay inside the permitted region, and you leave for a third country or region within that window.
The three conditions that trip people up:
- You must be going on somewhere else. A third country or region. Flying back to where you started is not a transit and does not qualify.
- You need the onward ticket before you land. Confirmed, departing within 240 hours.
- You enter through an approved port. Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport (DYG) is one of them, and Changsha Huanghua (CSX) is another. You can also land at Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Chengdu and others and travel onward here.
240 hours, and the clock starts at midnight on the day after you arrive rather than at the moment you land. Land on the 1st and the ten days begin on the 2nd.
Put those together and the answer is usually yes. You can often visit Zhangjiajie without a visa. The 240-hour visa-free transit covers it if your nationality is on the list, you enter at an approved port such as Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport, and you hold an onward ticket to a third country or region within ten days.
Which nationalities
Roughly 55 countries, and the list has been extended a few times since it launched, so check it against the current one before you book. It covers most of Europe, the United States, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Brunei, the UAE, Qatar and Indonesia.
One thing worth knowing if you hold a United States passport: the US is not on the separate unilateral visa-free entry lists, so the 240-hour transit route is usually the way Americans see Zhangjiajie without applying for a tourist visa.
Where you are allowed to go
The permitted region covers 24 provinces and Hunan is inside it, so Zhangjiajie is fine. Cross-province travel inside that region is allowed. The published area rules do differ by province — some are the whole province, some are named cities — so if your plan involves somewhere else in China, check that specific province.
What happens at the airport
No, you do not apply in advance. At DYG you go to the border inspection desk, show your passport and the confirmed onward ticket, and ask for the transit stay. They process it there and hand you a slip you should keep.
Then register where you sleep. Hotels do this at check-in, and it is meant to happen within 24 hours of arrival. Every hotel we book can register a foreign passport — not all of them in China can, which is its own problem, and we check that first.
Things people get wrong
- Booking a return flight to the departure country. That is not a transit. The onward leg has to be to a third country or region.
- Assuming the ten days start at landing. They start the next midnight.
- Turning up without the onward ticket. It has to exist before you are standing at the desk.
- Booking a hotel that cannot register them. The licence is not shown on booking sites. We check it.
Where to confirm it yourself
Policy in this area moves. Before you buy tickets, check the current list with the National Immigration Administration (nia.gov.cn), or call their 24-hour multilingual hotline on +86 12367 from inside China, or ask your nearest Chinese embassy or consulate. If you tell us your nationality and your route we will tell you what our other guests on that route have done — but the official answer is the one that counts at the desk.
