Hehua Airport (DYG) is a small airport, and that is part of the problem: there is no train from it, no metro, and no obvious queue for a car. You walk out of arrivals into a group of men asking where you are going. This page covers every way to get from that door to Wulingyuan, Tianmen Mountain or your hotel, with what each one actually costs and where each one falls short.
The three ways, side by side
| Option | To Wulingyuan | Cost | Catches |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-booked airport transfer | about 40–50 min, door to door | quoted per car | needs booking before you fly |
| Airport shuttle bus | about 50 min to the bus station | about RMB 15 per person | drops you ~2 km before the Sign Gate; runs to flight times, not to yours |
| Taxi / ride-hailing | about 45–50 min | about RMB 80–120 | rank taxis may refuse the meter; availability drops late at night |
Fares and bus routes in Zhangjiajie get adjusted. Check the current numbers before you rely on them — but the shape of the trade-off does not change: cheap costs you a connection, convenient costs you money, and a pre-booked car costs you neither as long as you book it.
Where the airport actually is
Hehua Airport sits about five kilometres from Zhangjiajie city centre, which means Tianmen Mountain is close and Wulingyuan is not. The two places you are most likely going are in opposite directions:
- To Tianmen Mountain / city hotels — about 10 km, 15 to 20 minutes. Short enough that a taxi is rarely worth arguing about.
- To Wulingyuan (Forest Park) — about 35 km, 40 to 50 minutes. Long enough that how you do it matters.
In Chinese, for showing to a driver or a ticket seller: 荷花机场 is the airport, 张家界西站 is the high-speed station, and 武陵源标志门 is the Wulingyuan Sign Gate. A screenshot of those three saves a lot of pointing.
Taking the shuttle bus
There are airport bus routes into the city and out to Wulingyuan. The Wulingyuan route costs roughly RMB 15 a head and takes about 50 minutes. Departures are tied to arriving flights rather than to a fixed timetable, which sounds convenient and mostly is — until you are the last flight of the night and the bus is waiting for nobody.
The part that catches people out: the bus terminates at Wulingyuan Bus Station, which is not the park entrance. The Sign Gate (Wujiayu ticket station) is about two kilometres further. That is a twenty minute walk with your luggage, or a local bus on route 1 or 2 for about RMB 1. If you arrive after dark, do not plan to walk it.
Taking a taxi or Didi
Taxis queue outside arrivals and the ride to the Sign Gate runs about RMB 80 to 120. Ride-hailing apps do work in Zhangjiajie, which is not true everywhere in Xiangxi, but early morning and late night availability is thin — the same shortage that hits Wulingyuan at seven in the morning.
Two rules. Use the official rank or the app, not the men who approach you inside the terminal; and agree the fare before the car moves. A driver who will not say how the fare is worked out is telling you something.
What a pre-booked transfer changes
None of the above is difficult. It is just that you are doing it jet lagged, with luggage, in a language you do not speak, and you have to get it right the first time. A booked transfer removes the parts that go wrong:
- He is inside the terminal, holding a card with your name on it. You are not scanning a taxi rank.
- The price is fixed before you fly, in writing, including tolls and parking. There is nothing to negotiate at eleven at night.
- He tracks the flight. If you land two hours late he is still there. Waiting for a delayed flight is not an extra charge.
- The car is the car. You agree a GL8 or a Sprinter, and that is what arrives. If the one you want is taken you hear it before you book, not at the kerb.
- Luggage is his problem. Tell us you are four with four large suitcases and we send something that fits them.
If you are arriving by train instead
Zhangjiajie West is the high-speed station, about 35 km from Wulingyuan and roughly 50 minutes by road. There are shuttle coaches to Wulingyuan from the Tourist Transport Dispatch Centre just outside the station, around RMB 13 to 15, running every twenty to thirty minutes through the day. A taxi from the station car park is around RMB 60 to 90.
The older Zhangjiajie railway station handles regular trains and sits closer to the city. If you are heading to Tianmen Mountain, the cable car lower station is a short ride from there.
We meet trains the same way we meet flights — name card, fixed price, and we check the timetable ourselves.
If you only have two days
Then the transfer is only one part of the plan. Have a look at our two-day Zhangjiajie itinerary — it puts Tianmen Mountain on the day you fly, because it is the one big sight that sits next to the airport.
If you have three days
Then the transfer is the start of a route rather than a single trip. Our three-day Zhangjiajie itinerary covers the Avatar peaks, the glass bridge, Yellow Dragon Cave and Tianmen Mountain, and finishes at the airport or the station on the last afternoon.
Add the park pass to the pickup
If you are landing and heading straight for the Forest Park, the ride and the four-day pass can be one booking: from USD 90 a head, driver waiting at arrivals, pass already under your passport. That combination is on our pass and pickup page.
Before you fly, set up a way to pay. Everything you need is on how to pay in China.
Questions people ask
How far is Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport from Wulingyuan?
About 35 kilometres, and 40 to 50 minutes by car depending on traffic and which part of Wulingyuan you are staying in. If you are going to Tianmen Mountain instead, it is roughly 10 kilometres and 15 to 20 minutes.
How much is a taxi from Zhangjiajie airport to Wulingyuan?
Usually RMB 80 to 120 to the Sign Gate. Agree the number before you get in, because not every driver will run the meter. A taxi into the city centre is closer to RMB 20 to 30.
Is there a shuttle bus from the airport to Wulingyuan?
Yes, roughly RMB 15 per person and about 50 minutes. The catch is where it stops: Wulingyuan Bus Station, which is around two kilometres short of the Sign Gate. Budget for a local bus or a short taxi at the other end, especially if you arrive at night.
What if my flight is delayed?
We check the arrival time before the driver leaves, and we move the pickup to match. Waiting for a delayed flight is not an extra charge. This is the single most common reason people book a transfer rather than queue for a taxi.
Can you pick us up at Zhangjiajie West railway station instead?
Yes. Same service, same fixed price in writing, and we check the train timetable rather than asking you to guess your arrival time.
Do you do the return trip to the airport?
Yes, and we will tell you what time to leave. The rule of thumb is three hours before an international flight and two before a domestic one, plus an extra half hour if you are leaving from Wulingyuan rather than the city.
Is this cheaper than a taxi?
For one person with a backpack, no — take the bus. For three or four with luggage, it is usually close to the cost of two taxis and you get a fixed price, a name card and somebody who knows which hotel entrance your driver can actually pull up to.
Book an airport transfer
Send us your flight number, arrival time, how many of you there are, and where you are staying. The flight number is the useful part — it lets us move the pickup if you are late without you having to find wifi in an arrivals hall.
WhatsApp — +86 180 7449 1863. We answer in English, usually within a few hours and always within 24.
Email — lianjizhi0744@hotmail.com. Flight numbers and passport lists are easier to send this way.
Or just send us the six things we need to quote: flight number, arrival time, headcount, how much luggage, and the hotel you are going to.
If you want a car for whole days rather than just the airport run, that is our private driver page. Staying several days? The four-day Zhangjiajie private tour is the one we run most often. Who is behind all of this, including our inbound travel licence number L-HUN-303754, is on the about page.
