Where you sleep in Zhangjiajie matters more than which hotel you pick. The two areas are 40 kilometres apart, they sit next to different parks, and moving between them eats half a day. Pick the wrong one and you will spend your trip in a car rather than in the mountains.
The two areas
| Area | Next to | Stay here if | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wulingyuan | The Forest Park gates, the Grand Canyon, Yellow Dragon Cave | The Forest Park is the reason you came. Three or four days | A small town. Fewer restaurants, quieter nights, 40 km from the airport |
| Zhangjiajie city | Tianmen Mountain, the airport, the railway station | You arrive late, leave early, or Tianmen Mountain is your first day | An hour from the Forest Park gates in morning traffic |
Three nights or more in the Forest Park? Sleep in Wulingyuan. Two nights with a flight at both ends? Sleep in the city and take the early drive. Nobody needs to change hotels mid-trip unless they are doing Tianmen Mountain on the last morning.
The thing that catches foreigners out
No, and the booking sites do not show which ones can. Places that host Chinese guests are common; places licensed to register foreign passport holders are a smaller set, and the licence is not advertised anywhere you can check before you pay.
It fails at reception, late, with your luggage on the floor: the desk tries to scan your passport into the public security system and cannot. Then you are the one finding a room at ten at night. Every place we book is checked for this first. That is the entire value of booking hotels through us, and it is worth more than the room rate we can get you.
What we actually do
- Check the hotel can register a foreign passport before you pay for anything.
- Confirm the rate we can get, in RMB, and tell you what it is before you commit. Some dates we can do better than the booking sites, some we cannot, and we say which.
- Put the hotel on the same sheet as the rest, so your driver knows where to go and the day is not spent explaining an address.
- Tell you the truth about the area rather than the one with the highest commission.
Check-in is with your passport, physical, every time. A photo of your passport on a phone will not do it. Registration with the local police happens at the desk and takes a couple of minutes, and you do nothing for it beyond standing there.
What to ask us for
Message us with your dates, how many rooms, and which park matters most. We will come back with two or three places that can actually take a foreign passport, what each costs, and which one is right for the days you have. We quote the rate we can get and you decide, and you hear the number before anything is committed. Asking costs nothing.
If you already booked somewhere and want to know whether they can take you, send us the name. We will tell you. It is usually a one-minute phone call for us and an awkward night for you if you skip it.
